In both an iron foundry and a steel foundry, the melting of the raw materials (pure scrap) usually takes place in electric induction furnaces. In addition, gas-fired (drum) furnaces and cupola furnaces are also used.
Alloy elements are added until the desired chemical analysis is achieved, which is verified and adjusted by sampling. The chemical analysis, together with any thermal treatment, determines the mechanical properties of a material.
